Testing Guidelines
To ensure accurate radon test results, it’s important to follow these guidelines:
- Test the lowest level of the home that is regularly used.
- Keep windows and exterior doors closed as much as possible during the test, except for normal entry and exit.
- Do not conduct short-term tests during severe storms or unusually high winds.
- Place the test device in a location where it will not be disturbed, away from drafts, high heat, high humidity, and exterior walls.
- Do not place the device in kitchens, bathrooms, laundry rooms, or hallways.
- Follow the instructions that come with your test device carefully.
- For real estate transactions, follow the EPA’s Home Buyer’s and Seller’s Guide to Radon for specific testing protocols.
After the test, send the device to the laboratory (if required) and wait for your results. If your radon level is 4 pCi/L or higher, the EPA recommends taking action to reduce radon in your home.
